Northumberland Street

Georgian houses have a very benign, strong presence. Many have been drastically altered over the years, modern things have been added that jar with the heritage of the building. We conducted a full renovation of this apartment on Edinburgh's gorgeous Northumberland Street. The client felt that the atmosphere had left the space, and our task was to bring that back.

Our main challenge was to combine a modern way of living with period elegance. The team removed a series of walls and repositioned a number of doorways in order to inject flow back into the apartment. The ceilings and walls were re-plastered throughout, and the ornate cornicing was cast and fitted to match the existing design. We consulted neighbouring properties to take profiles of the architraves, skirting boards and other mouldings in order to create exact replicas. We also replaced all of the window shutters. A new kitchen and bespoke wetroom were installed—the latter offers all the essentials in one confined space.

Tastefully redecorated throughout in a classic colour scheme, the space now has its period charm back.
